Roland Emmerich’s new film Anonymous isn’t even on general release yet but it has already caused quite a stir, (especially in Stratford-Upon-Avon). The film presents the theory that the plays and sonnets of William Shakespeare were actually written by the 17th Earl of Oxford, Edward De Vere. Anonymous is also a political thriller full of power struggles, attempted murder, jealousy and hatred, whilst demonstrating the influential nature of theatre and its ability to produce powerful reactions from an audience. The film is a venerable ‘Who’s Who’ of British film and boasts beautiful costumes along with some superb individual performances most notably from Vanessa Redgrave and Rhys Ifans. Philippa, our Marketing and Communications Co-ordinator, was lucky enough to attend the film’s premiere as part of the British Film Industry’s annual London Film Festival ahead of the crowds and definitely recommends making time to see Anonymous when the film hits cinema screens on Friday.
